Happy birthday to the Capital Wasteland. Fallout 3 launched in North America on October 28, 2008, on Xbox 360 and PC, which makes today its 18th anniversary.

This was Bethesda’s first swing at Fallout. Vault 101, Megaton, Three Dog on Galaxy News Radio, V.A.T.S. slow-mo headshots, and that first step out of the vault into a bombed-out Washington, D.C. A whole generation of Xbox players lost a summer (or three) to this game. And now that Bethesda is part of the Xbox family, Fallout is Xbox first party.

Fallout 3 is old enough to vote, and its remaster is real. Now Xbox just needs to tell us when.

Update 8:40 PM ET: Bethesda marked the day on X. Bethesda Game Studios posted: “Happy birthday to #Fallout 3 and 18 years of wandering the Capital Wasteland,” adding that “President Eden invites you inside Raven Rock to raise a Quantum!” The official Fallout account followed with “Happy Birthday, Fallout 3!”

What you need to know

  • Fallout 3 launch: October 28, 2008 in North America, on Xbox 360 and PC. Bethesda’s first Fallout game.
  • Remaster status: Officially confirmed by Bethesda Game Studios on July 17, 2026, alongside a Fallout: New Vegas remaster.
  • Release date: None yet. Bethesda: “we’re not announcing any dates today.”
  • Platforms, price, trailer: Not announced.
  • Also confirmed in that note: Fallout 5 in pre-production, a new Fallout game with Obsidian, and Fallout 76: Raven Rock in 2027.
  • Next big Fallout moment: Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027, with Fallout Day celebrated live in Washington, D.C., per Polygon.

Is a remaster next? It’s already confirmed.

This isn’t a “what if” anymore. On July 17, 2026, Bethesda Game Studios said it in plain words in a note posted on X titled “A NOTE FROM BETHESDA GAME STUDIOS.” The studio wrote: “We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences,” then: “While we’re not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.”

GamesRadar+ notes the remasters have been “heavily requested and heavily rumored since the release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered in 2025.” Same note confirmed Fallout 5 is the “long-range destination,” a new Fallout project with Obsidian, and a Fallout 76 expansion for 2027 called Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3, per GamesRadar+ and Polygon.

Before that, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported back in January that the Fallout 3 remaster would land “in the vein of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,” with New Vegas on top. Polygon also notes a Fallout 3 remaster first surfaced in documents from the FTC’s case over Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal.

What we still don’t know

What we still don’t have: a date, a platform list, or a trailer. Bethesda also skipped a traditional Fallout Day broadcast this year and says it has “something special” planned for Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027, with Fallout Day celebrated live in Washington, D.C., per Polygon.

OnPoint’s take: This is what owning Bethesda is supposed to look like. Oblivion Remastered shadow dropped in 2025 and Windows Central says it blew past Xbox’s expectations, so running that play back with Fallout 3 is a no-brainer. Here’s the part people are sleeping on: Fallout turns 30 in 2027, Bethesda is throwing the party in D.C., and D.C. is literally where Fallout 3 takes place. Our speculation, not a report: if you’re waiting on a date, that’s the window we’d circle. Either way, the Lone Wanderer is coming home on Xbox, and that’s a W.
