A new Microsoft job listing puts one person in charge of boxed Xbox games from the factory to the store shelf, just months after Sony set an end date for PlayStation discs.
Microsoft posted a new full-time role on October 14 for an Xbox Games Supply Strategist, based in Redmond, Washington, and fans spotted it a few days later. According to GameFragger’s breakdown of the listing, the person in the role “will coordinate the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms,” manage global supply and inventory, and oversee retail and sales execution. The listed U.S. base pay range is $97,600 to $188,400, and higher in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City.
A related Microsoft listing for a Senior Games Software Supply Strategist on LinkedIn describes owning “end-to-end supply strategy for Xbox physical game media across all global markets and retail channels.”
To be clear about what the listing does not say: it does not mention discs by name, and it does not confirm that Project Helix will have a disc drive. “Across all platforms” could also cover physical releases of Xbox games on other consoles, as Notebookcheck points out. Microsoft has not commented.
Compare that with PlayStation. On July 1, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After that, new games will be sold digitally only, including at retailers. Games already released on disc are not affected. Ars Technica noted that PlayStation’s own terms say a store purchase is a license, not ownership.
Xbox, meanwhile, launched its Disc-to-Digital program in late August, which lets owners of supported Xbox One and Series X games insert the disc to get a digital version, per VGTimes.
Two very different directions. PlayStation told its players physical is done. Xbox is hiring someone whose whole job is making sure boxed Xbox games land on shelves. Collectors, you will still have boxes to collect on Xbox. And if Xbox is still putting out disc games for Series X, there is zero reason to think that just stops because Sony decided it should. Whether the future is a disc, a cartridge or something new, Xbox is clearly keeping physical in the plan. If owning your games matters to you, you know which side to join.
