Edge sat in Rockstar North's Edinburgh studio while co-studio head Rob Nelson played GTA VI for 90 minutes with no script. The 16-page cover story is now free to read, and it is packed with new details on how Leonida works, three weeks before the November 19 launch.

The wait is almost over, and Rockstar just opened the doors. Edge magazine’s November issue (Edge 430, on sale October 29) carries a 16-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story, and the full feature is now free to read on GamesRadar+. Edge visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development, played the current build for 90 minutes. No publicist reading a script, no stage-managed demo. Just the game.

Edge also talked to Aaron Garbut, co-studio head and head of development, and Phil Hooker, who shares the head of development title and is driving the game toward stability. GTA VI launches November 19 on Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.

The key facts

  • Map size: roughly twice the size of GTA V’s. Rockstar says Leonida’s total landmass, including Vice City and the areas around it, is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.
  • Interiors: “an order of magnitude more interiors” than past games, per Garbut.
  • NPCs: every pedestrian was art-directed, with around 600,000 animations, and each one gets personality traits that shape how they react to you.
  • Criminal Profile: a new system that tracks Jason and Lucia from “Professional” to “Irredeemable,” and Rockstar says it will influence how the story unfolds.
  • Heat system: police track your description, your clothes, your partner, CCTV and your weapon, shown as icons on screen.
  • Relationship: Jason and Lucia’s closeness is measured on a four-point scale.
  • Launch: November 19, 2026.

What you need to know

A world built by hand, not by algorithm

Garbut told Edge: “Every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others. You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location.” Homes are built to look lived in, with photos on the walls and stuff piling up on tables.

One great example: a character reaction to a bad smell, first made for one piece of content, became a wider system. Garbut walked into a random house where a dog had trashed the place while its owners were out, and Jason started to grimace and recoil on his own, with no scene written for it.

Rockstar also set up a Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors and producers just to make Leonida’s people feel more individual. Nelson described building the population by asking: “Who’s going to be aggressive? How many people are going to go for a weapon? How many are going to test me?” In the demo, Jason stared too long at a man walking his dog. The man unclipped the leash and the dog chased Jason down the street.

Weather that actually moves

GTA V had preset weather. GTA VI’s clouds move on their own, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. You can see a storm form in the distance and drive into it. Roads get wet, buildings drip, and surfaces dry at different rates. Wind hits trees and waves, so boats get “really rocked around” in open water, and flying through a storm can buffet your plane or helicopter and even cause light damage. People on the street run for cover when the weather turns.

Slower days, narrower roads

GTA V’s wide roads have been narrowed to “a more believable size,” in Nelson’s words, and the day-night cycle is much longer, so sunsets linger and nights stretch out. When Rockstar tested GTA VI with GTA V’s timings, Nelson says “everything felt too fast.”

Walk around with a shotgun and people notice

In GTA V, people barely reacted to a weapon unless you aimed it. In GTA VI, carrying a shotgun in your hands is enough to scare a crowd, while one slung on your back is treated differently. The game also checks whether anyone actually saw you, and gives some leeway before a wanted level kicks in.

Criminal Profile: Professional or Irredeemable

Inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, the Criminal Profile tracks how you play, shown with angel and devil icons. You can knock enemies out instead of killing them, or try threats before violence. Shoot first and your profile turns violent. Rockstar says this will influence how Jason and Lucia’s story plays out. You choose what kind of criminal you are, not whether you are one.

Jason and Lucia: yours to keep or yours to lose

You can switch between the two when the story allows. Their closeness rises on a four-point scale as you spend time together: walks on the beach, cycling, the gym (once you buy a membership), or just driving around. Nelson would not confirm or deny whether they can get married. “We start them wanting to be together, and wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot,” Nelson said. “But, as the game progresses, it’s yours to keep or yours to lose.”

The heat system: outrun the police report

The police build a report on you: your physical description, whether you had a partner, what you wore, whether CCTV caught you, and what weapon you carried. Those show up as icons at the top of the screen. Split from your partner if witnesses saw two people. Change clothes. Drop the gun. Escaping means making yourself less recognizable, not just waiting out the stars.

Stealing cars got risky

Some drivers run when you jack them. Others are armed and fight back. Newer, expensive cars can carry trackers, and owners can call it in. Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout.

Here is how the car theft loop works:

  • Open the WAINK app to see which car models fences want, plus each car’s security and tracking features.
  • Steal the car. Higher-end models ping their location to the police, so you have to lose the tail.
  • Deliver it to the fence, who usually has a signal blocker. Part of your pay depends on the car’s condition.

Calling your car and your guns

Your own car comes to you through the Scooter Bros app: for a small fee someone drives it over within seconds, then rides off on a scooter. Your whole arsenal is stashed in the trunk.

Story pacing has natural breaks

You can still focus on story missions, but there is some gating between them. Sometimes Jason and Lucia need to raise cash first, by holding up a gas station or jewelry store or stealing a car a fence wants.

A whole life in Leonida

There are full bus and train systems. Hooker said: “I’m obsessed with making sure they always turn up,” and that he has memorized all the routes. Garbut put it simply: “You can have your life in the game.”

How Rockstar made it

  • Nelson led a small team to Miami in 2015 to scout a return to Vice City while Red Dead Redemption 2 was still in production.
  • Rockstar held off on locking in Jason and Lucia’s Bonnie-and-Clyde-style story until RDR2 was finished.
  • Rockstar North has about 900 people. Toronto led world population and research, and San Diego helped drive ambient and interactive events.
  • Sam Houser is still involved in every part of the game’s creative direction, and he and Nelson play each milestone together to flag problems.

What Rockstar is saying

  • Garbut: “We’ve not compromised on the scale, the detail, the interactivity, the story, the open world.” And: “I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.”
  • Hooker on launch day: “I can’t guess the public reaction,” and “We’ve made what we wanted to make.”
  • Nelson: “It’s ready,” and “It ceases to become ours, and it becomes everybody’s.”

OnPoint’s take: This is crazy. Rockstar is not just making the map bigger, it is making the world smarter, and that is the stuff that keeps people playing for years. The heat system, where you shake the cops by changing clothes and ditching your partner, and the Criminal Profile shaping the story are the two biggest things here, and nobody’s talking about the second one enough: your play style changes Jason and Lucia’s story. That is RDR2-level ambition in a GTA. Weather that rocks your boat, people who notice your shotgun, longer nights: this is the “go all in” kind of realism we love. Series X owners, clear that space now, because November 19 is going to be a Leonida takeover. What a time to be a gamer.
