Rumor

Graphics card makers still don't have what they need to build Nvidia's rumored 24GB RTX 5080, and that puts the December and January talk in doubt.

Last week we told you about a report out of China’s supply chain that Nvidia was speeding up a 24GB GeForce RTX 5080, possibly as early as December 2026 or January 2027 (our earlier story). Now a new report points the other way. According to Taiwanese hardware site BenchLife, as relayed by VideoCardz this morning, Nvidia was expected to hand board partners the design documentation for the 24GB card in October, and manufacturers still hadn’t received it by the end of the month. Nvidia has not confirmed a 24GB RTX 5080 at all.

What you need to know

  • The missing piece: board partners (the companies like ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte that build and sell the actual cards) haven’t gotten Nvidia’s RTX 5080 24GB design kits yet, according to BenchLife. BenchLife says those were expected in October.
  • Why it matters: without that documentation, manufacturers can’t finish their designs, testing and validation before mass production, per VideoCardz.
  • How long it takes: VideoCardz says a board partner once told them launching a new card takes at least six weeks after getting the design information. With AI demand eating up production capacity and memory and component shortages, VideoCardz says even two months from design kits to store shelves may be optimistic.
  • The January window: BenchLife believes a January release is unlikely, though VideoCardz notes there are still nearly three months until the end of January 2027.
  • CES is still in play: VideoCardz says it has heard repeated suggestions that Nvidia could announce its plans at CES 2027, January 6 to 9. An announcement doesn’t need cards ready for stores, so a CES reveal with a launch several weeks later is still possible.

How we got here

  • Oct 12: VideoCardz, citing BenchLife, reported Nvidia was aiming the 24GB model at the first quarter of 2027, with board partners only getting verbal heads-ups at that point.
  • Oct 30: a ChannelGate report from Chinese distribution channels, picked up by VideoCardz, said the card could hit China as early as December 2026, with the 16GB RTX 5080 being phased out there.
  • Oct 30: VideoCardz also reported the RTX 5080 had disappeared from Nvidia’s official US Marketplace, following the RTX 5090.
  • Nov 2: BenchLife’s new report says the design kits are late, which makes that earlier timeline look shaky.

The bigger worry for PC players

VideoCardz says the bigger concern is what happens to the cards you can buy right now. Both the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 are already hard to find at reasonable prices, and reports say supply to board partners has been restricted. If Nvidia is replacing the 16GB RTX 5080 while cutting RTX 5090 shipments, VideoCardz warns “the next two to three months could bring even worse availability and higher prices.”

For context, Nvidia launched the RTX 5080 at $999 in January 2025. VideoCardz’s US retail check on Oct 28 found the cheapest verified cards at $1,979.99 to $1,999.99, nearly double that.

OnPoint’s take: This is the part of the rumor mill nobody talks about. A card can’t show up in stores if the companies building it don’t even have the blueprints yet, so I’d stop counting on a 24GB 5080 under the tree this year. A CES tease in January sounds a lot more realistic, with actual cards landing later. The scary part is the gap in between. If the 16GB card is winding down and the new one isn’t ready, PC players looking to upgrade are stuck in the middle with prices that are already about double what they should be. If your current GPU still runs what you play, ride it out and don’t panic buy at these prices. And if you just want to play the big games this holiday without fighting a GPU market, a Series X with Game Pass is sitting right there. Are you holding out for the 24GB card or done waiting? Let me know in the comments.
