Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s New Game+ Is Live on Xbox, and the Gear Cap Just Doubled

Six years after launch, Valhalla's free "The Most Requested Update" is out now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. New Game+ is the headliner, but the real story is how much more room Eivor has to grow: gear now upgrades to level 27, the Rune Forge gets a new tier, and over 300 new runes just dropped into the game.

It’s here. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s The Most Requested Update is live today, November 5, on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, per Xbox Wire. It’s a free patch, and it finally adds the one thing Valhalla players have asked for since 2020: New Game+.

We told you this was coming when Ubisoft locked in the date during its Fall 2026 Assassin’s Creed update last week. Now we have the full feature list, and it goes a lot deeper than a simple restart button.

What’s in the update

Here’s everything Xbox Wire lists for The Most Requested Update:

  • New Game+: Unlocks after you finish the Holy Day quest. Every new NG+ run scales up in difficulty, so it keeps getting harder the more loops you do.
  • Mithril (new resource): Used to upgrade divine gear. In New Game+ you get Mithril when you pick up a piece of gear or interact with a book of knowledge you already own. It’s also sold in the Niflheim, Mastery and River Raid shops (Xbox Wire spells it “Nilfheim”).
  • Gear upgrades: The max level for every piece of gear goes from 13 to 27.
  • Better wealth chests in NG+: Carbon, Nickel and Tungsten from Wealth Chests turn into Platinum in New Game+.
  • Extended Progression Mode: When it’s on, your gear upgrades, runes and masteries all count toward your overall power level.
  • Stash: A new storage spot in Ravensthorpe that holds any gear or rune from your inventory.
  • Rune Forge update: Runes can now be upgraded for silver straight from the menu, and they can go up to a new Superior tier.
  • 300+ new engravable runes added to the game.

Ahead of launch, Ubisoft also said the update brings new achievements and a Master Assassin outfit inspired by Naoe from Assassin’s Creed Shadows, per TheSixthAxis.

How to get it

  1. Update Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. The patch is free.
  2. Finish the Holy Day quest to unlock New Game+.
  3. Want the new progression without restarting? You can. Lead Game Designer David Larouche says the extended progression mode, the higher gear caps, the new rune tier and the 300+ rune perks “are available without New Game+ as well.”

What the developers said

Ubisoft Lead Game Designer David Larouche talked through the update with Xbox Wire. The lines that matter:

  • On why NG+: “The New Game+ feature was definitely the most requested feature from fans. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a massive game, but for some, playing it once is not enough.”
  • On making it more than a replay: “We wanted the New Game+ experience to not simply be a do-over; we wanted to allow players to keep climbing in power, feel a more granular progression, and to keep improving their characters.”
  • On the rune flood: “We’ve added basically every single perk that was on an item as a rune that can be engraved in the rune forge, regardless of if it was released in the extended experience, from an expansion, or even from the Store.” He added: “I’m sure there are many overpowered combinations to be found!”
  • On why now, years after the last content update: “Valhalla may have released its final content update years ago, but that doesn’t mean players stopped caring about the game, and neither did we.”

The bigger picture

Valhalla recently passed 40 million players, which Ubisoft tied to this update in its Fall 2026 franchise update. The same update said Black Flag Resynced has wrapped its big content drops, Codename Hexe stays quiet until 2027, and no other Assassin’s Creed remake is in active development. We broke all of that down in our Fall 2026 update story.

OnPoint’s take: This is how you treat a game with 40 million players. Ubisoft didn’t just slap New Game+ on Valhalla and call it a day: doubling the gear cap, adding a new rune tier and dumping every item perk into the Rune Forge turns a six-year-old game into a fresh build-crafting playground. If you’ve got a finished Eivor save sitting on your Xbox, this is the best excuse you’ll get to go back to England. And it’s free. Let’s go.
