Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are now native Xbox Series X|S games with true 4K at 60 FPS, a 120 FPS mode, better lighting and textures, Impulse Triggers and Play Anywhere, all free for owners, just in time to get ready for Metro 2039.
One of the most atmospheric shooter series ever made just got the treatment fans have been asking for. 4A Games and Deep Silver dropped the METRO Redux Next-Gen Update on Xbox Series X|S on October 29, per Xbox Wire. Both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are now native Series X|S games, and the upgrade is free if you already own them.
What you need to know
- What: a free next-gen update for both games in Metro Redux: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux.
- When: out now (October 29, 2026).
- Where: Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox Ally and Ally X support and Xbox Play Anywhere, so your purchase covers Xbox console and Windows PC.
- Cost: free for existing owners, per Pure Xbox. The Metro Redux Bundle is on sale for $4.49 (regular price $29.99) on the Xbox Store, and the sale ends Nov 5, 2026, so grab it before then.
- Modes: true 4K at 60 FPS, or upscaled 4K at 120 FPS. Xbox Wire says 4A’s TSR upscaling and antialiasing sharpen things up on top of that.
- Heads up on saves: Pure Xbox says old saves don’t carry over to the new versions, so you’ll be starting a fresh run.
- Disc owners: Pure Xbox says both games support the Xbox Disc to Digital program, so you can claim a digital license from your disc and get the upgrade that way too.

Fixes that matter
- Black screens and crashes after suspend and Quick Resume on Series X|S are fixed.
- Save reliability is better, including cloud saves on Series X|S.
- No more checkpoints when you’re nearly out of gas mask filters, so you can’t get trapped in a death loop.
- Enemies no longer spot you through darkness and walls.
PC players win too
- Better stability on modern PCs (Windows 11, AMD GPUs, high refresh displays).
- Modern resolutions like 1440p and 4K show up properly instead of legacy options like 1600×1200.
- Ultrawide and high resolution display fixes, and Advanced PhysX is now on by default.
- Steam Cloud saves upload correctly again.
How it actually runs
Early footage from the Fuzion Xbox Testing YouTube channel, as reported by Pure Xbox, shows:
- Series X, Metro 2033 Redux: 4K output in both modes. The 60 FPS mode dips into the 50s and sometimes the 40s, while the 120 FPS mode looks largely stable.
- Series X, Metro: Last Light Redux: the same two 4K modes, with even steadier frame rates.
- Series S, both games: 1080p at a mostly solid 60 FPS.
In 4A’s words
Xbox Wire says the team “tuned each change carefully to authentically preserve the look and feel of the original games,” and calls the update “the perfect opportunity” for newcomers to jump in “ahead of METRO 2039’s launch on February 4, 2027.” Xbox Wire also says more than 50 million players have played the Metro series since the first game launched in 2010.
Why the timing matters
Metro 2039 launches February 4, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S and PC, per Windows Central. That gives you about three months to run through Artyom’s story in the Moscow tunnels, now at the best it has ever looked on console.
OnPoint’s take: This is how you do a next-gen update. Real 4K, a 120 FPS mode, better lighting, Impulse Triggers, Play Anywhere and Ally support, all for free, and a big list of PC fixes on top. Graphics matter to us, and these games were already moody as heck, so seeing them pushed this far on Series X is a W. If you’ve never played Metro, now is the time, before Metro 2039 drops in February. Grab a gas mask, turn the lights off, and get in the tunnels.
