Mouthwashing is headed to the big screen. Sony Pictures acquired the feature film rights to the psychological horror game from developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex, per Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
What you need to know
- Director: Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, Yellowjackets) is attached.
- Writers: Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who wrote The Invitation with her.
- Producers: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through Crooked Highway, which has a deal with Sony’s Screen Gems.
- Confirmed: Wrong Organ posted “The rumors are true” on X, per Inven Global.
- Not announced: cast, story details or release date.
The game follows five crew members stranded on the space freighter Tulpar. It launched on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox on PC on October 29, day one with Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass, per Xbox Wire.
OnPoint’s take: This is the right team. Kusama and the Black Phone crew know slow-burn dread, and that’s exactly what Mouthwashing is. The worry is the nonlinear story. The game messes with your head because you piece it together yourself, and a movie has to keep that feeling without spelling everything out.
If you haven’t played it, now’s the time. It’s short, it’s on Game Pass, and you’ll want to know the story before Hollywood tells it. Just don’t go in expecting a good time. Go in expecting to feel it.
