PS5 Owners Report Overheating Shutdowns as GTA VI Gets Close

A generic white and black console beside a red TOO HOT warning sign with the text PS5 RUNNING HOT? and GTA VI IS COMING

With Grand Theft Auto VI arriving November 19, PS5 players are posting about heat warnings, loud fans and consoles shutting off mid-game. One viral warning got its facts wrong, but the player reports are real.

Grand Theft Auto VI lands November 19, 2026, and a lot of PS5 owners are nervous their console won’t make it through launch week.

What players are reporting

These are player and repair reports, not official findings:

  • On Reddit’s r/GTA, an original PS5 owner said they had to send their console in for service because “it kept shutting down suddenly while in use,” and that the cause was overheating fixed by a cleaning.
  • On the GameFAQs PS5 board, a launch PS5 owner said their console “turned off a few times” after a few hours of play, and that the power supply was “choked with dust.”
  • Polish repairer Modyfikator89 shared a CFI-1116 PS5 with severe overheating where the liquid metal between the chip and the cooler had hardened into a crust and damaged the heatsink plating, covered by TweakTown, Notebookcheck and Journal du Geek. That’s one documented case, not proof every older PS5 will fail.

Journal du Geek pointed out that launch PS5s are now five to six years old. Sony has not publicly commented on these reports.

The myth to ignore

A viral post on X claimed GTA VI will overheat PS5s and credited Digital Foundry. Burlington repair shop Level 2 Repair noted that the attribution was wrong, and nobody can test the game on retail hardware before launch. Digital Foundry’s actual GTA VI talk has been about frame rate, not heat, per IGN.

Sony’s own guidance is to leave about 10 cm (4 inches) of space around the console, keep it out of closed cabinets and off thick carpet, as summed up by Journal du Geek.

The Xbox angle

GTA VI launches the same day on Xbox Series X|S, confirmed on the official Xbox store page and on Xbox Wire, which is hosting Rockstar’s launch trailer. Xbox players get Leonida on day one too.

OnPoint’s take: Let’s keep it a buck: no game “breaks” a healthy console. What GTA VI is going to do is expose the tired ones. Five or six years of dust, cat hair and all-night sessions add up, and the reports we’re seeing line up with that. That’s a bad look for PS5 owners heading into the biggest launch in years, and Sony staying quiet doesn’t help anybody.

Xbox fans, this isn’t a victory lap. Dust is dust on any box. Open up some space around your Series X|S, blow out the vents and you’re set for November 19. Everybody should be playing GTA VI that night, not sitting with a repair ticket.
