Boltgun 2 is fire, and I’m into it big time. I liked it when I got my hands on it in the summer, and the full release only proved how good it is. It’s addicting. I didn’t want to stop.

What it is

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is the sequel to the retro boomer shooter Boltgun, developed by Auroch Digital and published by Big Fan Games, a Devolver Digital label. It picks up right where the first game ended with a branching single player campaign. You play as Sternguard Veteran Malum Caedo or the fast Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath, each with their own weapons and playstyle, against all four Chaos god factions across hive cities, jungle swamps and the Ark of Omen. Mick Gordon even has a guest track for the final boss. It launched October 14, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Guns with meat on them

The shooting never stops feeling satisfying. If you like chunky gunshots and dismemberment, this is for you. The guns are loud, with real weight behind them. I love the little pause as you rev up the chainsword, and the shotgun to the body is exactly what you want. Line it up right and you can take out enemies on different sides at once. It scratches that old school shooter itch for me.

A massive explosion engulfs a red-armored enemy.
Loud guns, big explosions.

The art style is really well done. I love high fidelity Warhammer, but this retro look stands on its own.

Secrets, and a lot of them

Exploring pays off. I found secret areas, a special Vengeance ammo pickup that made my shots crazy and, at one point, a secret that literally saved me from dying. The music is smart, too. It reacts to what just happened, and it drops out when the fight is over like it’s telling you to move on.

Pixel-art enemies swarm through a green, overgrown area as the player fires.
Secrets hide in every corner.

You feel like a monster against huge odds, but it’s no joke. Some fights humbled me, a couple of enemies had me thinking about switching weapons and one death straight up broke my heart. I can’t imagine it on the harder difficulties.

Some fights will humble you.

Verdict: Play It Now

Boltgun 2 is addicting, satisfying and makes you feel like a badass the whole time. The team at Auroch Digital is kicking butt. If you love old school shooters, Play It Now.
