Sony's Q2 results are out overnight. Marvel's Wolverine has sold 2.4 million copies as of November 4, about 50 days after launch, while PS5 hardware shipments for the quarter fell to 2.6 million. Lifetime PS5 shipments sit at 97.9 million. Here's every number from the report, and what it means next to Insomniac's last Marvel hit.
Sony dropped its fiscal second-quarter results overnight, and the PlayStation numbers that jumped out aren’t the ones Sony wants leading the headline.
Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac’s PS5 exclusive that launched September 15, has sold 2.4 million units as of November 4, 2026. That is about 50 days of sales. Sony also shipped 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the three months ended September 30, bringing lifetime PS5 shipments to 97.9 million.
Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2.4 million units as of November 4, 2026.
Gematsu published the hardware and Wolverine figures at about 1:44 AM ET. VGChartz and Wario64 quickly amplified the Wolverine number. Reuters separately reported the group beat and the soft hardware quarter.
What you need to know
- Wolverine sales: 2.4 million units as of November 4, 2026 (Sony). Launch was September 15, so roughly 50 days.
- PS5 shipments this quarter: 2.6 million units (July 1 to September 30, 2026).
- PS5 lifetime: 97.9 million shipped worldwide.
- Year-ago hardware: Gematsu says the quarter is down 0.9 million from the same period a year earlier. Reuters put last year’s same-quarter figure at 4 million.
- PSN monthly active users: 127 million as of September 30, up 8 million year over year.
- Software this quarter: 88.2 million PS5 and PS4 software units sold, up 7.9 million year over year. First-party titles: 8.2 million, up 1.9 million. Full-game digital downloads: 78 percent of software sales, up six percentage points.
- Group headline (Reuters): Sony’s second-quarter operating profit rose 45 percent to 622.3 billion yen (about $3.95 billion). Sony raised its full-year profit outlook by 9 percent. The hit movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day helped the movies unit. Games is expected to get a lift from Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, while higher memory chip prices remain a pressure point.
The Wolverine number in context
Sony confirming 2.4 million in about seven weeks is the first official sales figure for Marvel’s Wolverine.
For comparison, Sony said in 2023 that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, also from Insomniac, sold through more than 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours and was the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in PlayStation history at the time. Wolverine needed about 50 days to clear a similar total.
That does not mean Wolverine is a flop on paper. Plenty of multiplatform games take a year to reach 2.4 million. It does mean Insomniac’s latest Marvel exclusive is running well behind the launch pace of its last one, on a platform that now has nearly 98 million consoles in the field.
Sony has not published a development budget for Wolverine, and it has not said whether the title is profitable yet.
Hardware is the quieter problem
2.6 million PS5s in a quarter is soft for a mature console heading into the biggest software release of the generation.
Lifetime: by June 30, Sony had shipped 95.3 million PS5s. Add 2.6 million and you get 97.9 million. The 100 million mark did not land in this report. It likely waits for the holiday quarter that includes GTA VI.
Sony has already raised the PS5’s price more than once this generation, and memory costs tied to the AI boom are still a theme in coverage of these results. Reuters notes Sony said in July it had secured the memory needed for this fiscal year’s projected volume. That does not erase the fact that hardware volume is down sharply from a year ago.

Software is still busy
The software side of the report looks healthier than the hardware:
- Combined PS5 and PS4 software: 88.2 million units in the quarter, up 7.9 million year over year.
- First-party: 8.2 million, up 1.9 million.
- Digital full-game share: 78 percent, up six points.
Wolverine is the first-party launch that sat inside this quarter. Phantom Blade Zero (late October) and GTA VI (November 19) fall into the next one, so they are outlook story, not Q2 scoreboard.
OnPoint’s take: Fifty days to match what Spider-Man 2 did in a day. That is the line. Sony just handed the internet the receipt on a big Insomniac exclusive that was supposed to be another platform seller, and it looks like a midcard release next to the last Marvel swing. Nearly 98 million PS5s out there, and Wolverine is sitting at 2.4 million after seven weeks. The exclusive pitch only works when the exclusive actually moves.
And the hardware number is the other shoe. 2.6 million consoles in a quarter, down hard from a year ago, while Sony keeps telling you memory is expensive and the box already costs more. Xbox fans already know the pitch: Game Pass, day-one first-party, and a platform that is not asking you to carry every $70 exclusive alone. PlayStation just put soft hardware and a soft Marvel exclusive in the same overnight dump. Our door is open. Join this side.
