World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4 with real controller support, and Blizzard's WoW boss says that's only the "first leg" of a bigger plan. Then she brought up Xbox's next-gen Project Helix. Here's exactly what was said, what Forever is, how to get in, and what it could mean for Xbox players.
Blizzard just gave Xbox players something to chew on. In a new interview with GamesRadar+, World of Warcraft executive producer and vice president Holly Longdale said the goal is to let people play WoW “wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want,” and she name-dropped Xbox’s next-gen Project Helix while explaining where platforms are headed.
To be clear up top: nothing was announced. There is no Xbox version of World of Warcraft confirmed today. But this is the head of WoW at a Microsoft-owned studio, a week before World of Warcraft: Forever launches with full controller support, bringing up the next Xbox by name. That’s worth talking about.
Blizzard is building the controller game first, and the WoW boss is already talking Project Helix.
What Blizzard actually said
GamesRadar+ asked Longdale and associate production director Clay Stone a direct question: is World of Warcraft: Forever launching as a PC-exclusive a missed opportunity? Here’s Longdale’s full answer, as Windows Central transcribed it:
“What you just described is really what we’re after. Play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want. But the first leg of that journey is getting gamepads working really well with World of Warcraft, and we thought Forever was the perfect place to start. Looking at where things are going when we hear about Project Helix et cetera, I think platforms will be a bit more ubiquitous. Honestly, we just want to be able to play it anywhere. We’ve seen people getting it working on the ROG Ally X…”
Stone jumped in with “Someone modded a Nintendo DS!” (per Wccftech’s transcript of the interview), and Longdale wrapped it up:
“I think just doing some of the work we’re doing on gamepad [support] is going to give players a lot of flexibility that I think goes beyond consoles.”
The key points
- No console announcement. Longdale talked goals, not plans or dates.
- Controller support is step one. Blizzard calls getting gamepads “working really well” the “first leg” of playing WoW on more devices.
- Project Helix came up by name. Longdale pointed to Helix as a sign that “platforms will be a bit more ubiquitous.”
- Handhelds are already in the picture. She mentioned players running Forever on the ROG Ally X, and GamesRadar+ played it on a ROG Xbox Ally X.
The other side of it
Back at BlizzCon in September, the Forever developers told Polygon not to count on the game coming to consoles or handheld PCs any time soon, and said that wasn’t really the goal of gamepad support. So today’s comments are a step further in tone, not a reversal of anything official. It’s still a “someday” statement.
What World of Warcraft: Forever is
Blizzard Name-Drops Project Helix While Talking About Playing World of Warcraft “On Whatever You Want”Forever is a new version of WoW that goes back to the original world, set after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. You start fresh, level to 60 with everyone else on fresh servers, and keep progressing through new stories and updates. It adds new quests, new race and class combos (including the new Skyborne race), updated visuals and the most complete controller setup WoW has ever had.
How the controller setup works
- An official controller interface with dedicated action bars, targeting and menu navigation, no add-ons like ConsolePort needed (per Wccftech and GameSpot).
- Xbox controllers are supported. Friendly targeting is on the left bumper and enemy targeting on the right bumper (per Polygon).
- Click the left stick to auto-run, click the right stick to ping things in the world.
- Spells and attacks sit on the d-pad and face buttons, and you swap action groups with the left trigger, right trigger, or both. GameSpot counts 28 keybinds on the pad.
- Blizzard’s own starter guide lists controller support as “in a beta state” at launch.

How to start on launch night
- Make a Battle.net account (or sign in to yours).
- Subscribe or add Game Time.
- Install the Battle.net app, install World of Warcraft, and pick World of Warcraft: Forever from the game version list.
- Plug in your Xbox controller if you want to play on the pad.
OnPoint’s take: Real talk, the head of WoW didn’t have to say “Project Helix” in that answer. She did. Blizzard is Xbox’s own studio, and the biggest PC MMO ever just got built from the ground up to play great on a controller. That’s not an accident. Helix is shaping up as an Xbox that leans hard into PC, and a WoW that already plays on a pad fits that box perfectly. Nobody is promising anything yet, and Blizzard said as much at BlizzCon, but if you’re a PC player who’s been curious about WoW, Forever on November 4 with an Xbox controller in your hands is the cleanest way in we’ve ever had. What a time to be an Xbox and PC fan.
