The looter-shooter series has officially crossed 100 million units sold. Buried in the same message: Gearbox says it's "taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole."
The Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold. Gearbox announced it today, Nov 2, in a message to the Borderlands community on the official site, and the official @Borderlands account posted it on X a little after 1 PM ET. Gearbox and 2K reposted it, and so did Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford.
“There aren’t many franchises that have ever hit that milestone, and we certainly didn’t get here on our own,” Gearbox wrote, pointing back to where it all started with the first Borderlands in 2009.
What you need to know
- The milestone: Borderlands as a franchise has passed 100 million units sold. Gearbox did not break that down by game or platform.
- Borderlands 4 Year 1 is done: Gearbox says it “just wrapped” the Year 1 roadmap, which brought two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters and a batch of new features and activities.
- What keeps going: Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges continue.
- The Hunt starts Nov 6: the long-running community fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital raised a record $118,995.80 earlier this year. This time 2K and Gearbox will match every dollar donated up to that record amount, which Gearbox says could push the total past $230,000.
The part everyone should be reading
The sales number is the headline, but the next paragraph is the story. Gearbox says the team is “cooking hard on more,” and then this:
“But we’re also taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole. Where can we take it next? What characters do you want to spend more time with? What stories deserve a payoff?”
Gearbox asks fans to share ideas on social and on the Gearbox Devcast, then closes with: “big plans take time, and we need some room to work. You can trust that we’ll talk more when the time is right.” No new game, spin-off or Year 2 roadmap was announced.
OnPoint’s take: 100 million is a monster number, and Xbox and PC players were a big part of building it. Borderlands has been a couch co-op and online co-op staple on Xbox since the 360 days, and PC has always been home base for the loot grind. Borderlands 4 is on Xbox Series X|S and PC right now, so this milestone is ours too.
But read between the lines. When a studio says “where can we take it next,” “what characters do you want more time with” and “big plans take time” in the same breath as a 100 million celebration, that’s not a Year 2 DLC teaser. That’s a studio warming people up for the next big Borderlands move, whether that’s a new game, a spin-off, or a story payoff for characters fans have been begging about. Nothing is confirmed, and we’re not going to pretend it is. But the door is wide open.

And the timing matters. Gearbox is asking for feedback now, which means what fans say in the next few months could actually shape it. If you’ve got a character you want to see again, this is the time to be loud about it.
Big respect too for the St. Jude match. The Hunt kicks off Nov 6, and this community has a real shot at blowing past last year’s record.
