Xbox Is Shutting Down Triple-Stack Achievement Shovelware

In a policy email to developers, Xbox says identical games released separately on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC with no distinct experience now break Microsoft Store rules. Play Anywhere or game binding is the way forward.

Xbox is going after the triple stack. According to an email to developers seen by TrueAchievements, releasing identical games that “don’t provide distinct experiences” will now violate section 10.1 of Microsoft Store policy (Distinct Function & Value; Accurate Representation). Xbox also warned it may restrict those duplicate releases from automatically getting access to the wider Xbox ecosystem.

A triple stack is when the same game ships three times, once each on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, each with its own SKU and its own identical achievement list. TrueAchievements’ data shows triple stacks jumped from 37 in 2024 to 246 in 2025, and sit at 233 so far in 2026.

Going forward, Xbox is telling developers who want to ship on all three to use a single product with Xbox Play Anywhere support, or game binding, which links versions so they share achievements, saves and multiplayer. Xbox clarified that genuine games with a distinct gameplay experience can still use Xbox services.

OnPoint’s take: This is a W for Xbox, period. Gamerscore is supposed to mean something, and seeing the new releases page buried under the same five-minute game three times over has been a bad look for years. Pushing devs toward Play Anywhere is the real win here: buy it once, play it on your Series X or your PC, one achievement list. That’s how it should work. Achievement hunters, are you happy or are you going to miss the easy 3,000G? Let us know.
