Nvidia insists its flagship GPU isn't discontinued, but one card maker says it can't buy the chip and memory kits anymore, not even on backorder.
German overclocker and hardware YouTuber Roman “der8auer” Hartung says an unnamed Nvidia board partner can no longer order the GB202 chip bundled with 32GB of GDDR7 memory, the kit used to build the GeForce RTX 5090. TechPowerUp, Wccftech and Notebookcheck all picked up his report on October 26.
RUMOR: A Board Partner Says It Can No Longer Order RTX 5090 Chips From NvidiaHere’s what the partner told der8auer, as quoted by TechPowerUp: “No, NVIDIA did not inform us that the RTX 5090 is EOL. But currently we cannot purchase GB202 together with 32 GB GDDR7 as a complete set, and we also don’t know if ordering will be possible in again in future.” The partner added that during past shortages Nvidia always allowed backorders, which “is currently not possible anymore.”
A cooler supplier also told der8auer that two board partners cut their RTX 5090 cooler forecasts for the first quarter of 2027 compared with the third quarter of 2026, and that it has received no RTX 5090 cooler orders at all for the second quarter of 2027.
What’s confirmed and what isn’t:
- Nvidia’s position: the RTX 5090 has not been discontinued and will keep shipping, though production capacity is constrained. Nvidia told der8auer that directly, and executive Jeff Fisher said the same earlier this month, per Notebookcheck and TechPowerUp.
- What we can see: Notebookcheck reports the card is missing from Nvidia’s US Marketplace and listed as “Not Carried” at Micro Center.
- What’s unclear: whether the ordering block hits every board partner or just the one der8auer talked to. Notebookcheck notes the restriction alone doesn’t prove production has stopped.
OnPoint’s take: I believe it. When card makers can’t even backorder, and cooler orders for mid 2027 are at zero, that’s what winding down looks like, whatever the official word is. It’s a tough look for the people who want the best PC on the block, because the flagship is getting harder to find while the AI business eats up the chips. But here’s the bright side for us: the big wins in PC gaming right now are about making the hardware you already own run better, from upscaling to Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery cutting out shader stutter. And if you’d rather skip a GPU hunt altogether, Xbox and Game Pass are still the easiest way to jump straight into the biggest games. Are you holding on to your current card, or chasing a 5090 while you still can? Let me know in the comments.
