God of War Laufey is slipping. Santa Monica Studio announced today, Wednesday, November 4, around 12 PM ET, that the PS5 game is moving from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027. That’s a three month delay for a game that was revealed in June.

What you need to know

  • Old date: February 16, 2027
  • New date: May 20, 2027
  • Platform: PS5
  • Why: Santa Monica Studio says it needs the extra time for “finishing touches”
  • Announced: via the official @SonySantaMonica account on November 4, 2026, around 12 PM ET
  • Heads up: at the time we checked, PlayStation’s official game page still listed the old February 16 date

What Santa Monica Studio said

Here’s the core of the statement, as posted by the studio:

“Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen.”

“With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”

The studio closed by thanking fans for their patience and said it will “be back to share more updates soon.”

What God of War Laufey is

Laufey is the first mainline God of War game that doesn’t put Kratos in the lead. You play as Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, Kratos’s wife and the mother of Atreus, who dies before the events of the 2018 God of War. PlayStation’s game page lists Deborah Ann Woll as Laufey, Chris Judge as Kratos, Jack Quaid as Phranque and Perlina Lau as Rue, with Ariel Lawrence as game director and Cory Barlog as Santa Monica’s head of creative.

The Fable angle

Here’s the part a lot of people are going to skip past. Laufey’s old date, February 16, sat exactly one week before Fable. Playground Games’ Fable launches February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5, day one with Game Pass, and Premium Edition owners get early access starting February 18. That’s two days after Laufey would have dropped.

Windows Central’s Jez Corden noticed it right away: “Interesting, gives Fable some more breathing space on PS5.”

With Laufey gone until May, Fable no longer launches one week after a brand new God of War on PS5.

OnPoint’s take: Look, delays are never fun, and nobody here is rooting for a game to be bad. If Santa Monica needs three more months, take them. But let’s call it what it is: PlayStation’s big early 2027 tentpole just walked off the stage, and the timing works out great for Xbox.

Fable is the one that matters to us. It’s a fresh start for one of Xbox’s most loved franchises, it’s day one on Game Pass, and it’s playable on Xbox and PC with Play Anywhere. Now it gets February with a lot less noise around it, including on PS5, where it would have been fighting a fresh God of War for attention. Fable gets the spotlight. Laufey gets the “see you in May.”

And for PlayStation fans who already had February circled, that’s a rough Wednesday. A June reveal with a February date, now pushed to May. It is what it is. Meanwhile, Albion’s still on schedule.
