At WSJ Tech: California on November 4, a Wall Street Journal interviewer told Strauss Zelnick there is a concern that Grand Theft Auto VI is Take-Two's big hit and that the company does not have enough hits in its library. The Take-Two CEO answered with 15 franchises at 5 million-plus units each, called the GTA VI delay a "must have," and said the game must be "spectacularly entertaining" on November 19. The clip is already blowing up.
Two weeks out from Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick sat down at WSJ Tech: California for a session billed as “The Biggest Launch in Gaming.” The interviewer, WSJ deputy media editor Jessica Toonkel, put a concern to him that the gaming internet immediately clipped and ran with.
“I think there is a concern that this is your big hit and that you don’t have enough hits in your library,” she said. “How do you, like, knock that down?”
Zelnick’s face did the first half of the work. Then he answered with numbers.

What Zelnick actually said about the “hits” dig
From the interview audio:
“Well, look, we have 15 franchises that have each sold at least five million units in an individual release. I think we have the best collection of owned intellectual property in the video game business. And I think that’s reflected in our top line, our bottom line, and our market cap. So I guess the way I respond to it is, like, examine the fact.”
He then walked the room through the catalog: Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption (“a massive title” that “sold over 65 million units in the most recent release”), Red Dead Online, Grand Theft Auto Online, NBA 2K (“the second-biggest sports title worldwide, the biggest in North America”), WWE 2K, BioShock, Borderlands, Civilization, plus mobile hits like Words With Friends, Empires & Puzzles and Zynga Poker.
“It’s a pretty good story,” he finished.
The delay was a “must have”
Earlier in the same conversation, Zelnick talked about how Rockstar’s Jennifer Kolbe, who runs the studio on the business side, brought him the GTA VI date move. He said the two have worked together for nearly two decades.
“I know if I’m having a conversation with Jen where it’s like, you know, a nice to have or a must have. This was not a nice to have. This was a must have.”
He also pushed back on shipping to a calendar no matter what. Without naming the title, he pointed to a “very high-profile release” in the past few years that shipped on a rigid schedule and then had to be pulled after launch because “it didn’t work.” Gaming fans heard that as a clear nod to Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch window. Zelnick did not say the name on the clip.
Handcrafted, not generative AI theater
On AI, Zelnick said the word is “a mixed term” in games because consumers do not want anything labeled AI in their games, and he stressed that Grand Theft Auto is “handcrafted.” He also noted the obvious: games are built on computers with technology, and Take-Two has used AI and machine learning in the ordinary technical sense “since the beginning of time.”
Was asking Zelnick if Take-Two has enough hits wild?

The lightning-round closer
Toonkel closed with a finish-the-sentence prompt: if GTA VI accomplishes one thing on November 19, it must be…
Zelnick: “Spectacularly entertaining.”
Why Xbox fans care
GTA VI launches November 19 on Xbox Series X|S. Pre-load starts November 10. This is the biggest multiplatform launch on the calendar, and the CEO of the company shipping it just got asked, on a WSJ stage, whether the rest of the library even counts. The internet’s reaction tells you how that landed.
OnPoint’s take: Asking the CEO of Take-Two, two weeks before GTA VI, whether the company has enough hits is a wild swing. GTA Online alone has been a money printer for years. Red Dead, NBA 2K, Borderlands, BioShock. The man listed fifteen franchises at five million-plus and then said “examine the fact.” That is the whole reply.
For Xbox players, the only line that actually matters is the last one. November 19. Spectacularly entertaining. Pre-load is already on the calendar. Clear the drive, lock the date, and ignore the stage questions. We are about to find out if Rockstar still knows how to make the whole industry stop for a week.
