Unreal Engine 5.8 Adopts Xbox’s Shader Stutter Fix, and PC Gaming Wins Big

Epic has built Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery straight into Unreal Engine 5.8, so games can ship with shaders already compiled for your GPU. Microsoft says Steam and the Epic Games Store are next.

If you game on PC, you know the pain. You boot up a brand new game and sit through a “compiling shaders” bar for minutes, or you skip it and eat stutters every time something new shows up on screen. Unreal Engine 5 games have been some of the worst offenders. Now the engine behind a huge chunk of the industry is officially getting Microsoft’s fix.

Epic Games has added native support for Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) to Unreal Engine 5.8, per OC3D and VideoCardz, both citing Epic’s new developer documentation. A new ASD Tool takes a finished Windows build of a game and creates a database of its shaders. A supported storefront then turns that into precompiled shaders for specific GPU families and drivers, and players get them when they download the game instead of compiling everything on their own machine.

Here’s how it works in practice. Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog says ASD first launched with Gears of War: E-Day, and as of October 21 it’s broadly available on Windows 11 PCs with AMD, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm graphics. Microsoft’s showcase is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: with ASD, the company says first-launch shader compilation takes “just a few seconds, compared to several minutes on a typical PC without ASD.” You’ll see a “Precompiled shaders installed” message in the bottom left when it’s working, and you need the Xbox PC app installed before you download.

Right now ASD runs through the Microsoft Store and the Xbox PC app. Microsoft says it “will soon expand” to the Epic Games Store and Steam, and that Fortnite is getting ASD support in an upcoming update. Epic’s documentation targets early 2027 for Epic Games Store support, per OC3D and VideoCardz.

There are limits, and they matter:

  • Not every stutter is shader stutter. Epic says ASD works alongside its existing PSO caching, not instead of it, and any shaders missing from a game’s database can still compile during play. Asset streaming and traversal hitches are a separate problem, as OC3D points out.
  • No ray tracing yet. The ASD Tool doesn’t cover ray-tracing pipeline states, and it needs DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6, per TechSpot.
  • Developers have to opt in. Studios need to build and submit the shader databases, and update them whenever a patch changes the shaders.
  • Your PC has to be current. Microsoft lists Windows 11 24H2 or newer, plus minimum drivers: Nvidia 621.01 or higher on any RTX card, AMD Adrenalin 26.6.1 or higher on RDNA 1 through RDNA 4, and recent drivers for Intel Arc B-Series and Snapdragon X2.

One heads up for Nvidia owners: Nvidia has confirmed a bug in that same 621.01 driver that can cause video freezes and black screens, with no fix date yet. Rolling back to 617.42 avoids it, but that puts you below the driver Microsoft lists for ASD until a fixed driver lands.

OnPoint’s take: This is Xbox fixing PC gaming, and I love it. Shader stutter has been the number one thing that makes a $2,000 rig feel worse than a console, and the fix came from Microsoft, debuted on Gears of War: E-Day, and is now baked into the engine most big games are built on. Xbox didn’t keep it locked to its own store either. Steam and Epic are next, which means every PC player wins and the Xbox PC app gets to be the place it worked first. It won’t kill every hitch on day one, and developers still have to do the work, but the days of staring at a shader progress bar are numbered. What a time to be an Xbox and PC player. Let me know in the comments which Unreal game you want patched first.
