What you need to know

How fast it climbed

SteamDB posted at 1:53 AM ET that Phantom Blade Zero had hit 431,541 concurrent players on Steam for the first time, with a 76.26% user rating at that point. By Thursday morning it had blown past that. SteamDB logged a 722,976 peak at about 9:55 AM ET, and the all-time mark now sits at 723,876.

GameSpot put it plainly: “Just a few hours into launch, Phantom Blade Zero is already a hit game on PC.”

Where the sales came from

Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott broke down pre-orders when they had reached 850,000 units, per GameSpot:

  • 62.5% of pre-launch sales came from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • Those markets, mostly China, made up 75.9% of the copies on Steam.
  • Early sales had generated $43 million in revenue.
  • Elliott says it’s already in the top 40 games of 2026 by revenue.

For context, GameSpot notes it probably won’t match Black Myth: Wukong, the other big hit from China’s game scene, which sold 10 million units in its first three days.

What the studio said

Creative director Soulframe Liang thanked fans in a launch-day letter: “This is a game of immense scale, made with all the passion in our hearts. It is a gift from a small group of gamers who just happen to be developers, to every gamer who shares our love for gaming.”

The game

Per its Steam page, Phantom Blade Zero is built in Unreal Engine 5. You play as Soul, “a warrior with only sixty-six days left to live,” fending off assassins and unraveling world-ending conspiracies. Fight scenes were choreographed with action legend Donnie Yen, per GameSpot.

The PC catch: shaders

Not everything is smooth. Players are reporting shader compilation taking up to 30 minutes before they can start, and Wccftech’s tests showed about 74 FPS average at 1440p Ultra and 103 FPS at 1440p with optimized settings, per Pirat_Nation’s roundup.

Tip: let the shaders finish on first boot before you jump in. It’s a one-time wait.

Want it cheaper?

Wario64 spotted the Steam key at $50.99 on Green Man Gaming.

OnPoint’s take: This is crazy. A brand new IP, not a sequel, not a remake, just pulled 723K players on Steam alone on day one. That’s PC gaming flexing, and it’s a reminder that Steam is where the biggest launches are going down right now. The 30-minute shader wait is a real knock, so S-GAME needs to patch that fast, but players clearly don’t care when the combat is this good. PC players, are you in? Let us know.
